The Challenge
A leading groundworks and civil engineering contractor working with Barratt, Redrow, Taylor Wimpey, and other major house builders. Their legacy MS Access database was causing synchronisation failures between two locations and couldn't handle enterprise-level requirements for 400+ staff.
The Solution
Full migration from MS Access to a secure, API-first enterprise platform on Azure. A custom RESTful API serves as the backbone — connecting the desktop application, third-party mobile provider (iSOS), and real-time updates via SignalR. Azure Managed Identity eliminates stored credentials entirely, with Key Vault managing secrets and dynamic firewall rules securing database access.
Key Modules
- RESTful API — purpose-built Web API serving as the integration layer between the desktop application, iSOS third-party mobile platform, and real-time SignalR hub. All external access flows through authenticated API endpoints
- Third-Party Integration (iSOS) — full API integration with iSOS mobile workforce platform. Site personnel clock in from remote locations with data flowing through the API to headquarters in real time via SignalR
- Personnel & Qualifications — staff photos and certifications stored in Azure Blob with Managed Identity authentication. Eliminated the need for 400-page printed qualification documents on every site
- Fleet Management — 329 vehicles tracked with MOT, tax, ULEZ, SORN status, allocation, and type classification
- Site & Contract Management — full project tracking across all active construction sites
- Timesheets — integrated with mobile clock-in data for accurate payroll preparation
- Health & Safety — real-time qualification visibility, significantly reducing office admin time
- Security & Infrastructure — Azure Managed Identity (zero stored credentials), Key Vault for secrets management, Azure AD with group-based access control, and dynamic SQL firewall rules
Results
- Zero stored credentials — Managed Identity authenticates to Azure SQL, Blob Storage, and Key Vault without passwords
- 329 vehicles tracked with MOT, tax, ULEZ, and SORN status — all in one place
- Eliminated the 400-page printed qualification document previously required on every site
- 400+ staff managed with qualifications, photos, and certifications accessible from any location
- Real-time clock-in via mobile app significantly reduced office admin time
