Common Questions
Straight answers about working with SWF Consultancy — cost, process, ownership, and what to expect.
How much does bespoke software cost?
I work on time and materials — you pay for the hours I work, tracked and invoiced transparently. There are no inflated fixed-price estimates or "change request" fees when requirements evolve. For a ballpark: a focused integration or small application typically runs £3,000–£8,000. A full enterprise system with cloud backend, multiple modules, and ongoing development is an ongoing engagement. I will always be upfront about what your specific project will involve before any work starts.
How long does a project take?
You get working software from day one — not a mockup, not a design document, but real running code you can use immediately. AI-assisted development has cut traditional timescales by roughly 80%. What used to take 8 weeks now takes 2. What used to take 3 months can be done in weeks. The honest answer is: it depends on scope. But you will see progress every day, not wait months for a big reveal.
Who owns the code when the project is finished?
You do. Every line of code I write lives in a GitHub repository that you own. You have full access to the source code, the complete version history, and all database scripts from day one. If we ever part ways, you walk away with everything. No lock-in, no proprietary black boxes, no ransom for your own software.
What happens if something goes wrong after launch?
I do not disappear after go-live. I am there for questions, fixes, and the inevitable "can we also do this?" requests that come up once people see what is possible. Most of my client relationships last years — some are over twenty years old. I am invested in the software working well because your success is what keeps me working.
Do I need to be technical to work with you?
Not at all. My clients are business owners and operations managers, not developers. You describe the problem in plain English — what your team actually does, what is slowing you down, what you wish you could see or automate. I translate that into software. You will see working software early and feed back in real time. No jargon, no assumptions.
Can you migrate our MS Access database to something modern?
Yes — this is one of the most common things I do. I have migrated dozens of SMEs from MS Access to Azure SQL, typically running the old and new systems in parallel until your team is confident. AI-assisted development has cut the traditional migration timeline by around 80%. Running costs for Azure SQL are typically £30–80 per month — less than most businesses spend on the IT call-outs caused by Access problems.
Do you work with businesses outside Devon?
Yes. I established the business in Sussex in 2006 and still work with clients across Sussex, Kent, Hampshire, and beyond. Technology means I work just as effectively with remote clients. For larger projects or when face-to-face matters, I visit on-site.
What technology stack do you use?
My core stack is C# and .NET 8 for desktop applications (WPF), with Azure SQL databases, Azure Active Directory for authentication, and Azure Blob Storage for files. I use DevExpress for professional UI components and ClickOnce for seamless automatic updates. For cloud backends and web integrations I work with ASP.NET Core Web APIs. I am a Microsoft Partner.
How does AI-assisted development benefit me?
AI has fundamentally changed how software gets built. I use AI throughout the development workflow — analysing requirements, generating and reviewing code, catching edge cases, writing tests, and flagging potential issues before they reach you. The result: faster delivery, fewer bugs, and a lower cost to you. What used to take a team of developers now takes one experienced engineer amplified by AI. Enterprise-grade software at a pace and price that was not possible two years ago.
How do I get started?
Get in touch. No obligation, no hard sell — just a conversation about what you need and whether I can help. If it does not make sense for your situation, I will tell you that too. I have been doing this for over 20 years and I genuinely enjoy helping businesses get past the problems that are slowing them down.
